How to Change Transmission Fluid Chevy Silverado 1500

Introduction

One essential and important routine for every vehicle is keeping track of its transmission fluid. You need to regularly keep track of your transmission fluid to increase the life span of your vehicle. The transmission fluid is used in both automatic and manual transmissions.

Whether your Chevy Silverado 1500 is using a manual and automatic transmission, you need to get the transmission fluid changed as stated by the manufacturer to prevent complete failure. If you are using a manual Chevy Silverado, then you need to change the fluid between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. Automatic transmission may or may not need the transmission fluid to be changed for 30000 miles. The only way to be certain about changing the transmission fluid for your Chevy Silverado is to either take it to a professional or check your manual.

When you change the transmission fluid in a Chevrolet truck, it helps the truck to shift easily and accurately. When you use the transmission fluid for years without changing, it can cause the fluid to become contaminated. You will have to constantly change it as recommended to continue maintaining your transmission.

If you want to change the transmission fluid of your 200 Chevy Silverado, you will need the following items: Socket wrench, Crescent wrench, Socket set, drain pan, brake cleaner, transmission filter, transmission pan gasket, and ounces of fluid. Below are the steps you need to go through to successfully change your transmission fluid.

Step 1

The first thing to do is to remove the pan. To do this, you need to locate it under the Chevy truck. It is usually located at the back of the motor. The pan is the bottom part of the transmission. Before you begin to unbolt, you can check if there is a drain plug. Use a drain pan to catch the fluid as it falls out. Now, with the help of your crescent wrench, you can lose the plug. Once all the fluid falls out, tighten the plug. However, if the pan has no plug, you will have to remove the bolts. Unscrew it in a way that the fluid will not create a mess. Place the draining pan just underneath it.

Once you remove the transmission pan successfully, you have to make sure it is cleaned before reinstalling it. You can also remove gasket materials from the bottom of the transmission and the pan to avoid leakage. The next thing to do now is to use the socket wrench to remove the filter. It is in the housing of the transmission.

Step 2

To clean the transmission pan, you can make use of the brake cleaner. It is very effective in getting rid of old fluids. Also, clean out any metal remnants in the pan. Now, you have to change the transmission filter. It is necessary and recommended to always change the filter when changing the fluid. To do this, you have to drop the O-ring firmly on the suction side of the filter before attaching it.

Proceed by placing the gasket on the pan and match it up to the bolt holes. Now, you have to start bolting in. However, to do this perfectly, do not tighten the bolt until you have inserted all in their rightful place. Once you have placed all the bolts, use the socket wrench to tighten it all.  Once you do this, you can start pouring your fluid.

Step 3

To pour in fluid, you have to go to the hood of the car. Open it and find the engine compartment. Now, look for the oil dipstick of the transmission, it usually has a red cap.        Insert a funnel and pour it in your fluid. You have to pour in five quarts and then check whether it is not too full. Keep pouring until you see it is at its correct level. Make sure you do not overfill.

Finally, start the vehicle and let it work for a few minutes. Recheck the level after testing the car again and fill if it is low. After this, lock the dipstick back to the tune and close your car’s hood.

You can change the transmission fluid of your 2004 Tahoe following the same method written above. You need to prepare your car first by warming it up. Then place a drain pan to drain out fluid just like above. This is usually done to avoid the mess that the oil will cause. You will have to get a gasket scraper to get rid of every remnant on the transmission pan. Always remember to get a new filter if you have the intention of changing the transmission fluid.

Once, you are done, warm the engine and keep checking the transmission fluid level. Refill if necessary.
